So, there was this rumor going around last week that a truck selling Oatly’s new ice cream was driving around Los Angeles. If you listen to my podcast, you know I stan Oatly. Seriously, their oat milk is the best vegan milk on the market. It’s so popular you can’t even find it at the supermarket because it sells out immediately.
I honestly wasn’t putting much thought into this Oatly ice cream truck, but then my husband and I spotted it in our neighborhood while driving home on Thursday. It was parked on Sunset right in front of Intelligentsia here in Silver Lake. I screamed, “STOP! THE! CAR!” (I can be kinda extra)
I got in line and bought the three pints they were selling: oat, strawberry, and chocolate. The people working the truck were awesome so I asked them about the Oatly shortage. I told them my husband and I were in Europe two weeks ago and there was Oatly everywhere… in the US you can barely find anything other than chocolate milk. What’s up, gurls? They let me know that Oatly is almost done building not one, but two US production facilities (one in New Jersey, another in Utah) to keep up with demand. They said within the next year Oatly expects to increase its output by eight fold in the states.
So while we wait for the day that we can find Oatly’s barista blend in the supermarket, we can at least track down Oatly’s ice cream truck for pints – well, Angelinos can anyway.
Here’s what we thought of Oatly’s new ice cream:
First, a disclaimer…
Before tasting I have to admit I was a little underwhelmed by these flavor options: chocolate, strawberry, and oat? These seem kinda basic in today’s world where you have vegan ice creams like So Delicious’ Caramel Apple Crumble, Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Half Baked, or even Target’s Vanilla Cake and Cookie Dough. Still, I wanted to give these a go because of how I feel about Oatly. Thanks for letting me vent.
OAT
Let me just say that what Oatly lacks in flavor creativity they make up for in the creaminess department. The oat flavor is one of the smoothest, silkiest, creamiest vegan ice creams I’ve ever tasted. The flavor here is subdued but still great. I was expecting something akin to vanilla, but it’s more of a sweet cream. Imagine if you took the flavor of whipped cream and condensed it into an ice cream. This would be perfect paired with a hot apple crumble or rhubarb pie. I could also see using this flavor to make a thick and creamy milkshake.
STRAWBERRY
I’m not usually a person who likes fruity dessert. Give me chocolate, give me caramel, give me peanut butter – you get the picture. That being said, the strawberry flavor is good. It’s like they blended fresh strawberries into the oat flavor to create this light and zippy strawberry cream. This is the perfect pint to pop open while you’re lounging by the pool or on the porch on a summer’s day. What rosé is to wine, this flavor is to ice cream.
CHOCOLATE
I am firm believer that chocolate should be its own food group. I literally eat chocolate every single day and I’m proud of it. So when I say I loved Oatly’s chocolate ice cream you know I’m not fucking around. While most vegan chocolate ice creams tend to veer more towards dark chocolate (and there’s nothing wrong with that), Oatly’s is more of a dense, creamy blend. I’d say milk chocolate, but honestly the flavor I got was more of like a brownie. It’s velvety and delicious – and you will love it!
