10 Vegan Cookbooks We Actually Use

One of the questions I always get from new vegans is for cookbook recommendations. Over the years, my husband and I have owned dozens vegan cookbooks and there are literally thousands in print.

These are the ones we’ve used the most over the years (you’ll even see some paper flags sticking out in some of the pics). Some of these cookbooks are newer and some of them have been on our shelf for over a decade. I’m going to share some specific recipes we love and also a couple pics we’ve taken over the years too. Now remember, you definitely don’t need to break your bank buying a bunch of cookbooks right away if you’re a new vegan. There are millions of vegan recipes online from vegan bloggers, YouTubers, etc. you can try too.

So, without further ado, here are our favorite cookbooks:

1. Chloe’s Kitchen by Chloe Coscarelli

OK, so what I especially love about Chloe Coscarelli is that all her recipes are really good and they’re also really easy. My favorite recipe in this book is her avocado pesto pasta. It’s seriously AMAZING and we make it all the time! We usually add some Field Roast sausage to bulk it up. Also, her spaghetti bolognese is fabulous and you make the “meat” completely from scratch!

2. Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero

This cookbook is an essential tome co-authored by the vegan queen herself, Isa Chandra Moskowitz. Two big stand-out recipes in this book are the chickpea cutlets (which taste like Thanksgiving) and the penne vodka. The walnut mushroom pâté is also excellent!

3. Forks Over Knives The Cookbook by Del Sroufe

I was sent an advanced copy of this cookbook (I’m SO fancy, right?) to review it for a podcast. I have to admit I was skeptical at first because everything in here is super healthy: no oil, no salt, etc. But gurl was I surprised! The recipes in this cookbook are excellent and pack a ton of flavor. My two favorites are the cauliflower and white bean bake, which my husband and I make ALL the time (I just leave out the spicy stuff cause this recipe brings the heat) and the kale salad with maple-mustard dressing. I’ve tried quite a few recipes from this book and I’ve never been disappointed.

4. The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook by Jo Stepaniak

This book is a rare gem! It is the quintessential cookbook for anyone who wants to try their hand at vegan cheesemaking. The recipe for the crock cheese is next level — and it’s SO easy. The muenster cheese recipe is INSANE! Look at the pic we snapped after we made it — and yes, it tastes as good as it looks!

5. Isa Does It by Isa Chandra Moskowitz

There is a queen of vegan cookbook authors and her name is Isa Chandra Moskowitz. She is the OG. Simply put, there is not a bad recipe in this book. Our favorites are the tofu mushroom stroganoff, the seitan and wild mushroom stew, and the chandra malai kofta. They are all excellent! Keep in mind, I’ve found the recipes in this book take a little bit more time. So put on some music, open a bottle of something, and enjoy the journey — it’s worth it!

6. The Vegan Table by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau

This book is comprehensive and the recipes are solid! But there is one standout recipe that is a staple in our house: the herbed scalloped potatoes! Lord have mercy! I’ve even made this recipe for my very, very non-vegan father and he loves it. One tip when using this cookbook, she tends to go a little light on the herbs/spices, so play around. Try her recommendations at first and if it’s not enough, do a dash or so more of this or that.

7. BOSH! by Henry Firth and Ian Theasby

These guys burst onto the vegan scene with their recipe videos that dominated social media. Their recipes are simple and delicious. Before you buy their book, try some from their videos and see what you think. Some favorites for us include: the creamy carbonara and the spaghetti bolognese. They also have a recipe for French onion soup that I’m dying to try. We made their version of camembert cheese (CamemBOSH!) from one of their videos and it was sensational! Pic below.

8. Artisan Vegan Cheese by Miyoko Schinner

What Isa is to vegan cookbooks, Miyoko is to vegan cheese. This is the book that started it all! Nowadays you can buy Miyoko’s phenomenal cheese and butter in places like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, but this book teaches you how to make it on your own. My husband used to make her sharp cheddar recipe religiously about once a week. The mozzarella recipe is also outstanding!

9. But I Could Never Go Vegan! by Kristy Turner

So, truth be told, we have not made a lot of recipes out of this book (though the recipe for vegan honey sounds so interesting). But there is one recipe we make from here all the time, the tofu chèvre. It is SO good! Will post a picture below. We took this one an extra step and rolled it in smoked bourbon peppercorn. GURL!!

10. Chloe’s Vegan Italian Kitchen by Chloe Coscarelli

I started with Chloe and I’m going to end with Chloe because she’s my favorite. Like I said before, she makes vegan cooking super simple and delicious. My favorite recipe in here is the pasta carbonara with shiitake bacon. But honestly, try anything. I promise, you can’t go wrong!
